Proper Usage of Solarmeter ® Ultraviolet Radiometer for Lamp Tests:

• Wear UV-block eye protection when checking UV lamps
• Allow lamps to warm-up prior to taking readings (at least 5 min)
• Hold sensor close to lamp or acrylic to measure individual lamp MED intensity. Hold sensor at 25 cm above bench with canopy closed for body position reading. Te (Time to 4 MEDs in minutes) = 240 / MED/hr reading

Energy Production over Time:

The above 1218 Watts value is an "instantaneous" number. Energy is Watt (or kiloWatt) hours. So if the solar irradiance remained constant for an hour near noon, the energy produced would be 1218 WH. To estimate power over the entire day... take readings every hour and apply the above examples. Then add up each hour's value x number of hours for daily WattHours. Of course the value will increase toward summer, peaking near June 21 in northern hemisphere... and decrease toward winter, lowest near December 21 solstice. Southern hemisphere is opposite.

The G5842 is a semiconductor UV sensor consisting of a GaAsP photodiode chip and a UV filter. The G5842 is completely insensitive to visible light longer than 400 nm and infrared radiation since its spectral response covers only the UV region from 260 to 400 nm. Applications of the G5842 include solar UV detection, as the spectral response is well matched to the solar UV spectrum, and tanning lamps peaking near 365 nm ("new era" fluorescent and "high pressure" HID).

Proper Usage of Solarmeter ® Ultraviolet Radiometer for Lamp Tests:

• Wear UV-block eye, face, hand protection when checking UVC lamps
• Allow lamps to warm-up prior to taking readings (at least 5 min)
• Hold sensor close to lamp to measure individual lamp UVC intensity. Hold sensor at distance from lamp(s) for effective sterilization intensity
• When checking aging of lamps, keep measuring distance and locations constant
• Lamps should be replaced when output drops to about 70% of their original (new) readings
• If unsure of what original new values were, replace a lamp with new one and compare old one
• Do not subject the meter to extremes in temperature, humidity, shock or dust
• Use a dry, soft cloth to clean the intrument. Keep sensor free of oil, dirt, etc
